SYNOPSIS • MCSE 2003vs
Microsoft’s
exam 70-296, “Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows
Server 2003 Environment for an MCSE Certified on Windows 2000” is one of two
exams required for an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) Certified on
Windows 2000 to update to an MCSE on Windows 2003. It is designed for IT
professionals who work in the typically complex computing environment of
medium to large companies. The prerequisite for this exam is to be certified
as an MCSE on Windows 2000. Moreover, candidates should have experience implementing
and administering a network operating system in the type of environment
described here.
Note that Microsoft does not document the format of
a particular exam. Microsoft exams might include adaptive testing technology
and simulation items. However, Microsoft does not identify the format in which exams are
presented.

This was a long exam, 130 minutes and took almost all of that. Passed first try, also passed first try for 70-292. So don't get scared off doing this. Just study hard. 70-292 was easier, do it first.

I had expectations that this exam would be extremely difficult. I was worried about failing because I took the 70-292 before this one on the same day, and my brain was a bit fried from all the studying and testing. My relief came when I viewed the review screen and hadn't marked as many questions as I thought I did.
Everyone is spot-on about the content of the exam, however, I work with a lot of this stuff daily, so it was not as difficult. It did take me nearly the full two hours for the exam, and I passed with a 900.

I failed the exam the first time. I was throwen off because of the exam format. Part 1 has 24 questions and Part 2 has 26. Be careful you can not go back to part 1 after starting part 2. I passed with an 800 the second time because I treated each part as a separate exam.

Passed that exam from the first try, after going for the previous one (70-292 - the hardest to pass Microsoft exam) four times. The amount of material is huge. You don't need to memorize facts, but to connect the pieces and study the whole picture. Good luck!

I found the exam to be pretty straightforward given it is an upgrade exam meant to truly test your knowledge base as well as what you know about new features in the OS. Loads of CA/PKI, IPSec, and of course trusts/GPO/active directory/disaster recovery. Also, know smart cards and TS. Not much DNS on this one though! I have to say that this was an easy kill for me because I use this stuff every day!

And I have found it to be more challenging than previous Microsoft exams I have attempted. But it should be.
It was hard for me to fail my first Microsoft exam, as that was a point of pride that got destroyed by this exam. But when it is all said and done, the number of tries doesn't outweigh the end result when you conquer it.

Not too bad. I failed my first attempt with 535. I was a liitle bit too over confident after passing 70-292 with little study. Make sure you know your IPSEC, DNS, PKI and Group Policy.
